Baseball Falls to Coahoma in Doubleheader
Decatur, AL – Calhoun baseball continued its homestand Saturday afternoon, Feb. 7, hosting Coahoma CC for a doubleheader at Fred Frickie Field. The Warhawks battled throughout the day but came up short in both contests, falling 4-2 in Game 1 before dropping a 14-11 decision in Game 2, which was called after six innings due to darkness.
Game 1 – Coahoma CC 4, Calhoun 2
The opener developed into a pitching-heavy contest, with Calhoun limited to two runs despite drawing seven walks.
Jayson Smith Jr. and Gavin Gonzalez accounted for the Warhawks' runs, each scoring once, while Seth Walton recorded one of Calhoun's two hits in the game. Taisuky Rodriguez added a stolen base as the Warhawks tried to generate pressure on the basepaths.
On the mound, Bryant Jones and Josh Burrell kept Calhoun within striking distance. Jones worked 2.2 innings, allowing three runs, none earned, while striking out four. Burrell followed with 4.1 strong innings of relief, surrendering just one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Coahoma capitalized on free passes and timely hits to edge out the Warhawks in the opener.
Game 2 – Coahoma CC 14, Calhoun 11 (6 innings)
Calhoun's offense broke out in the afternoon's second game, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits, but couldn't overcome Coahoma's big innings in a game that was halted after six innings due to fading daylight.
Noah Alburquerque led the Warhawks at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Seth Walton added a 2-for-3 performance with three runs, while William Singewald delivered a key three-RBI effort. Austin Williamson drove in two runs and scored once, and Jayson Smith Jr. chipped in an RBI double.
Calhoun showed patience offensively, drawing 12 walks and swiping three bases, but Coahoma's offense pushed across 14 runs to hold off the late Warhawk surge.
On the mound, six Calhoun pitchers combined in the shortened contest, with Ashton Dickey ptching two innings and allowing three runs. Despite moments of strong work in relief, Coahoma's timely hitting proved too much to overcome.
First year Head Coach Cameron Chafetz emphasized the significance of mental toughness after the contest. "We have to hate losing more than we like winning" Chafetz said. "Our guys like to win, but we have to hate this feeling if we want results in this conference. We can't accept being complacent, there needs to be some mental toughness to push through some tough at-bats and innings to keep moving forward"
Calhoun moves on to host Columbia State on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 1:00 p.m.
