First Strike Not Enough Against Southern Union
Decatur, AL – Calhoun men's soccer dropped a tightly contested match Wednesday night at Jack Allen, falling 2-1 to Southern Union in conference play.
The Warhawks controlled the pace for much of the second half and broke through in the 70th minute when Randy Cortes found the back of the net to give Calhoun a 1-0 lead. However, Southern Union capitalized on two late chances in the final 10 minutes, flipping the scoreline to take a 2-1 win.
The match was physical and heated throughout, but Calhoun generated several strong looks at goal and maintained composure in the face of pressure.
Head Coach Felix Obilo said he was encouraged by his team's effort. "I'm proud of the way we kept our composure against a team like Southern Union. They try to get under your skin, but we stayed focused and played our game. We just ran out of steam at the end. If we can finish games with the same intensity we start with, we'll put ourselves in position to win more of these matches."
The Warhawks, now 1-7 overall, will play their final home match of the season on Saturday, October 4 at 7 p.m. against Wallace State.
