Bio

Samiya Steele enters her first season on Byrd's staff at Calhoun after a standout collegiate playing career and a decorated high school résumé. Steele joins the Warhawks following two seasons at Jacksonville State, where she played in 28 games and made 21 starts at point guard during her junior year. Off the court, she was an active leader in the athletic department, serving on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and earning the Conference USA Service Award for the 2024–25 academic year.

Before her time at Jacksonville State, Steele spent the 2022–23 season at Alabama State, where she appeared in 29 games and made 27 starts as a freshman. She helped lead the Lady Hornets to a 16-15 overall record, 12 conference wins, and a trip to the SWAC Tournament Semifinals.

A Huntsville native, Steele starred at powerhouse Hazel Green High School under head coach Tim Miller. She was named Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year and Miss Alabama Basketball as a senior, guiding the Lady Trojans to four consecutive AHSAA 6A State Championships. Over her final three seasons, Hazel Green posted a combined record of 97-3, with Steele earning three All-Tournament MVPs and back-to-back 6A MVP honors.

Steele earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice from Jacksonville State in 2025. She is the daughter of Patricia and Stacey Steele and has a younger brother, Elijah.
