Softball Earns Split with Northwest Shoals
Muscle Shoals, AL / Decatur, AL — Calhoun softball split a four-game ACCC series with Northwest Shoals this past week, dropping the first two on the road before bouncing back with a pair of dominant wins at home. The Warhawks opened the series in Muscle Shoals on Wednesday and returned to Decatur for the final two games on Friday.
Game 1 – Northwest Shoals 3, Calhoun 2
Calhoun came up just short in a tightly contested opener despite taking an early lead.
After falling behind 1-0, the Warhawks pushed across two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 advantage. Northwest Shoals answered immediately in the bottom half with two runs of their own to reclaim a 3-2 lead and held on the rest of the way.
Calhoun continued to apply pressure throughout the game but was unable to find the equalizer. Addi Wilson took the loss in the circle, while Madison Allen led the offense with a double and two RBI.
Game 2 – Northwest Shoals 7, Calhoun 0
In game two, Calhoun struggled to generate momentum on either side of the ball in a 7-0 loss.
Using a pitching-by-committee approach, the Warhawks were unable to slow down the Patriots while managing just four hits offensively. Madison Allen again provided a bright spot, going 2-for-3 with a double.
Game 3 – Calhoun 7, Northwest Shoals 5
Returning home, Calhoun responded with energy and resilience, rallying for a 7-5 comeback victory.
Northwest Shoals jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, but the Warhawks steadily chipped away, tying the game at 4-4 by the fourth inning. Calhoun then pulled ahead with three more runs while limiting the Patriots to just one the rest of the way.
Emellie Hamilton earned the win in relief after replacing Kaylee Williams, and Addi Wilson closed the door to secure the save. Tessa Jacobs paced the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 performance that included a home run and two RBI.
Game 4 – Calhoun 10, Northwest Shoals 0 (5 innings)
The Warhawks completed the turnaround in dominant fashion, securing a run-rule victory in the series finale.
Addi Wilson delivered a strong performance in the circle, allowing just three hits while keeping Northwest Shoals scoreless. Offensively, Calhoun broke through with 10 runs, controlling the game from start to finish.
Missey French led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the win.
Head coach Denton Bowling reflected on the team's response after the slow start. "We didn't have our best showing on the road, but I was really proud of how we answered when we got back home," Bowling said. "The energy was different, the focus was sharper, and we found ways to compete and execute. That's the kind of response you want to see from your group."
Calhoun will return to action on Thursday, April 30, hosting Shelton State for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in the final regular season series of the year.
