Softball Drops Series to #4 Northeast Alabama
Rainsville, AL / Decatur, AL — Calhoun softball opened Alabama Community College Conference play with a four-game series against the nationally ranked No. 4 Northeast Alabama Mustangs, falling in all four contests across Thursday and Saturday.
Calhoun dropped the opening doubleheader in Rainsville before returning home to Decatur for the final two games of the series.
Game 1 – Northeast Alabama 12, Calhoun 0 (5 innings)
The Mustangs showcased the form that has earned them the No. 4 national ranking, scoring 12 runs across three innings while holding the Warhawks scoreless in a 12-0 run-rule victory.
Only three Calhoun hitters recorded hits against Northeast Alabama ace Addison Edwards, who improved to 11-0 with the win.
Kaylee Williams started in the circle for the Warhawks and was charged with the loss.
Game 2 – Northeast Alabama 6, Calhoun 3
Northeast Alabama struck early in game two, plating three runs in the opening inning to seize momentum.
With Addi Wilson in the circle, however, Calhoun steadied itself and chipped away at the deficit, eventually tying the game at 3-3 as the contest moved into the late innings.
In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, defensive miscues proved costly for the Warhawks as the Mustangs capitalized and pushed across three runs to take a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish.
Tabitha Frazier led Calhoun offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Morgan Lane added a triple, while Addison Wallace and Tessa Jacobs each drove in runs.
Game 3 – Northeast Alabama 6, Calhoun 0
With the series shifting to Decatur on Saturday, Northeast Alabama again controlled the contest behind dominant pitching.
The Mustangs held a perfect game deep into the final inning before Sage Lewis broke it up, lining a ball over the pitcher's head that dropped for Calhoun's first hit of the afternoon.
Emellie Hamilton got the start in the circle for the Warhawks and took the loss.
Game 4 – Northeast Alabama 10, Calhoun 8
The Warhawks saved their most determined effort for the series finale.
Trailing 8-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning and facing the possibility of a run-rule defeat, Calhoun mounted an impressive rally. The Warhawks erupted for six runs in the inning to suddenly cut the deficit to 8-6 and inject life into the contest.
Northeast Alabama responded with two runs in the sixth and brought Edwards back into the circle to secure the game.
Calhoun refused to fade, adding two more runs in the seventh to trim the margin to 10-8, but ultimately ran out of outs as the Mustangs completed the four-game sweep.
Head coach Denton Bowling credited his team's resilience despite the results. "That's a tremendous team with a ton of talent in that dugout," Bowling said. "Our girls fought hard all week, and I was especially proud of the way they battled in game four. We were three outs away from packing up and heading home early, but instead they dug in and put together a big inning in the fifth that really challenged them. That kind of effort says a lot about this group and their work ethic. It's not the result we wanted, but there's a lot we can take from this and build on moving forward."
Calhoun (15-15) will travel to face Snead State on Thursday, March 19, for the next conference series.
