Warhawks Hold Lake Land to 1 Run in Sweep
Decatur, AL — Calhoun softball delivered back-to-back strong performances on Friday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against the Lake Land Lakers at home, winning game one 3-0, before taking game two 4-1 in the series.
The Warhawks relied on dominant pitching and timely hitting to secure the sweep, redeeming an earlier loss to the Lakers, and improving to 12-9 on the season.
Game 1 – Calhoun 3, Lake Land 0
Sophomore Kaylee Williams turned in a complete-game shutout, facing 25 batters and throwing 92 pitches across seven scoreless innings. Williams allowed just four hits while keeping the Lakers off the scoreboard to anchor the 3-0 win.
Calhoun wasted no time getting started offensively. The Warhawks got on base with a walk and two singles to open the bottom of the first, and Addison Wallace delivered with an RBI single to right center to give Calhoun the early lead.
The Warhawks added another run in the second inning when Tessa Jacobs doubled after a leadoff single, driving in Calhoun's second run of the afternoon.
Calhoun extended their advantage in the fifth, as Emily Burgreen singled to bring home the final run of the game, providing Williams with all the support she would need.
Jacobs, Burgreen, and Wallace each finished 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the offense.
Game 2 – Calhoun 4, Lake Land 1
Freshman Addi Wilson matched Williams' performance in the circle in game two, delivering another complete game while facing 23 batters and throwing 80 pitches. Wilson allowed just one hit and one unearned run while keeping the Lakers offense in check.
After a scoreless first inning, Calhoun broke through in the second when Madison Allen tripled and later scored on an RBI from Sage Lewis to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Calhoun added to their advantage in the fourth inning when Addison Wallace led off with a single and Allen followed with her second triple of the game. On the same play, Allen scored on an errant throw, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Warhawks plated their final run when Morgan Lane scored on a sacrifice fly from Kenley Holcombe. Lake Land's only run came on a defensive miscue that allowed a steal of home, but the Warhawks prevented any further damage to secure the sweep.
Madison Allen led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance, both triples, scoring twice and driving in a run. Morgan Lane also went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Keeli Mullins added a hit in her lone plate appearance.
Head Coach Denton Bowling credited his team's focus and resilience in the bounce-back sweep. "I thought we put together a really solid effort across both games today," Bowling said. "Lake Land is a strong program and they got the better of us earlier this season, so it was important for our group to respond. It was good to see our girls compete the way they did and earn those two wins."
Calhoun (12-9) returns to action Saturday, Feb. 28, hosting Itawamba, who is ranked No. 11 nationally in the Division II poll, for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
