Ervin's 22 and 10 Not Enough at Southern Union
Wadley, AL – Calhoun women's basketball fell 69-60 at Southern Union on Thursday night in a hard-fought ACCC matchup, marking the Warhawks' fifth straight loss. The two teams met earlier in the season at Kelley Gymnasium, where Calhoun took an 80-55 win in their conference opener, but the Bison came ready to avenge their January defeat.
Southern Union set the tone early, outscoring Calhoun 20-11 in the first quarter. The Warhawks responded in the second, edging the Bison 15-11, keeping the game within striking distance heading into the break. The second half saw Southern Union pull away, pouring in 25 points in the third quarter before adding another 13 in the final frame to seal the victory.
Jasmine Ervin led the Warhawks with a double-double, posting 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Mekera Standridge added 12 points. However, the rebounding battle told the story of the night, as Calhoun was outworked on the boards 48-29 by the Bison.
Head Coach Candace Byrd acknowledged the team's struggles and emphasized the mental side of the game. "We're just not playing Calhoun basketball right now," Byrd said. "It's become more mental than anything. We know we can compete in this conference, but we need to believe in each other on the court and play with some heart and spirit if we expect to get the results we want."
Calhoun (11-12, 2-6) will look to regroup as they face another tough test Monday, February 16, at 5:30 p.m., hosting nationally-ranked No. 5 Shelton State (22-2, 8-0).
