Men's Basketball Struggles at Bishop State
Mobile, AL – The Calhoun men's basketball offense stalled Thursday night, as the Warhawks posted their lowest scoring output of the season in a 92–61 conference loss at Bishop State.
Bishop State set the tone from the opening tip with physical full-court pressure, matching, and flipping, the defensive intensity Calhoun typically brings. As the Warhawk offense struggled to find rhythm, the Wildcats capitalized early, knocking down four of their first five three-point attempts to seize control.
Calhoun fell into a 25–14 hole midway through the first half and shifted into a zone defense in an effort to disrupt Bishop State's flow. While the adjustment slowed things momentarily, the Wildcats continued to convert efficiently, and Calhoun went into the locker room trailing by 16 at the break.
Any hopes of a second-half surge were quickly erased. Out of the halftime break, Calhoun committed turnovers on five of their first seven possessions, allowing Bishop State to stretch the lead and create a deficit too large to overcome.
Efficiency told the story on the stat sheet. Bishop State placed four players in double figures, each scoring 15 or more points, while Calhoun managed just one double-digit scorer with 10 points. The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field, 47 percent from three, and 83 percent from the free-throw line, compared to Calhoun's 33 percent shooting overall, 28 percent from beyond the arc, and 62 percent at the stripe.
Calhoun's leading scorer was limited to just six points before fouling out after 26 minutes of action, a reflection of a night where little went right for the Warhawks.
Head Coach Derrick Powell emphasized the need for adaptability following the loss. "We've got to find answers when shots aren't falling," Powell said. "Some nights the ball just doesn't go in, but we have to do a better job of slowing the pace and getting control when a team is scoring at a 50 percent clip."
Calhoun (13-9, 3-3) travels to Gadsden State (14-8, 4-2) on Monday, Feb. 9, for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
