Men's Basketball Storms Past Lawson State, 107-85
Decatur, AL — Calhoun men's basketball put together an explosive second-half performance to pull away from Lawson State, earning a 107–85 home win on Thursday night's Homecoming Celebration game.
The Warhawks wasted little time setting the tone, opening the game with two quick buckets at the rim and a triple. Lawson State responded with steady pressure in the early minutes, and the first half turned into a game of runs. Calhoun flowed in and out of rhythm but consistently found answers to maintain control, carrying a 51–45 lead into halftime.
The second half belonged entirely to the Warhawks. Calhoun tightened the screws defensively, dictated the pace on both ends, and never allowed Lawson to mount a serious run. Sophomore guard Masiah Robinson sparked the surge, controlling the tempo and either scoring or assisting on 10 straight Calhoun points around the 10-minute mark, the sequence that fully broke the game open.
From there, full-court pressure fueled the offense. Turnovers turned into open-floor dunks and uncontested three-pointers as Calhoun steadily stretched the lead to put the contest away.
Five Warhawks finished in double figures, led by sophomore Tahir Bond's 22 points. Jordan Johnson posted a well-rounded line with 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Jackson Porch knocked down 12 points from beyond the arc.
Head coach Derrick Powell praised his team's energy and approach after the break. "We played loose in the second half, we played with energy, and that's how we need to play moving forward," Powell said. "When we're flying around, sharing the ball, and defending with purpose, we're a tough team to deal with. That second half is the standard we're chasing."
Calhoun (12-8, 2-2) will prepare quickly for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Wallace State (11-9, 3-1) on Monday, February 2.
