Frontcourt Explodes in Women's Basketball Win over Southern Union
Decatur, AL — Calhoun women's basketball opened ACCC play in emphatic fashion Thursday night, rolling past Southern Union 80–55 behind a dominant interior performance at Kelley Gymnasium. The Warhawks set the tone early, played to their strengths throughout, and never relinquished control in the conference opener.
Calhoun came out firing in the first half, immediately dictating tempo and physicality. The Warhawks posted 19 points in the opening quarter before erupting for 29 more in the second, overwhelming the Bison with a relentless inside attack. Behind a dominant frontcourt presence, Calhoun built a commanding 48–25 halftime advantage while asserting itself on the glass and in the paint.
Southern Union showed pushback coming out of the break, putting together its best offensive quarter of the night in the third. The Bison scored 18 points and briefly slowed Calhoun's rhythm, holding the Warhawks to 15 in the period. Calhoun regrouped heading into the final 10 minutes and slammed the door, locking down defensively and holding Southern Union to just 12 points while continuing to punish the Bison inside en route to the victory.
Throughout the night, the Warhawks' post play proved overwhelming. Jamya Glover delivered a massive performance with 20 points, 17 rebounds, and seven blocks, controlling both ends of the floor. Jasmine Ervin followed with 18 points and 19 rebounds, while Kamora Simpson added 19 points, nine boards, and three steals. The trio combined for 38 of Calhoun's 48 first-half points and anchored a frontcourt that Southern Union had no answer for.
Calhoun dominated the rebounding battle from start to finish, outrebounding the Bison 58–29 and consistently generating second-chance opportunities that fueled the offensive surge.
Head Coach Candace Byrd praised her team's commitment to its identity. "We really leaned into who we are tonight," Byrd said. "We got the ball where it needed to be, played inside-out, and trusted our post players to make plays. There's still work to do, we've got to clean up turnovers and finish better at the free-throw line, but this was a really strong overall body of work to open conference play. I'm really proud of Jam and Jaz for the way they competed on both ends of the floor. Now we'll get back to work and prepare for Shelton on Monday."
The Warhawks (10-6) will hit the road next, traveling to face No. 10 nationally ranked Shelton State on Monday, January 19, with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
