Men's Basketball Downs Vol State, 95-83
Decatur, AL – Calhoun men's basketball put together a complete performance on Saturday afternoon, defending home court with a 95–83 win over Volunteer State at Kelley Gymnasium. The Warhawks set the tone early with dominant first-half shooting, building a 10-point halftime lead and never allowing the Pioneers to fully seize momentum.
Calhoun's offense was sharp from the opening tip, carving out a 47–37 advantage at the break. The Warhawks weathered an early storm midway through the first half when Volunteer State knocked down four consecutive three-pointers on four straight possessions, but Calhoun responded with poise, matching energy with execution to keep control of the game.
The second half featured stretches of back-and-forth runs, with both teams trading baskets, but Calhoun consistently answered every push. The Warhawks combined defensive intensity with efficient shooting, finishing the game at 47% from the field and an impressive 44% from beyond the arc. That balance allowed Calhoun to keep the door shut on a relentless Pioneer offense and maintain breathing room down the stretch.
Just as importantly, Calhoun dictated the physical side of the game. The Warhawks dominated the glass, outrebounding Volunteer State 51–31 to control tempo and limit second-chance opportunities. That edge proved pivotal in maintaining offensive flow and wearing down the Pioneers as the game progressed.
Veteran guard Jordan Johnson once again orchestrated the attack, finishing with 24 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while keeping the offense organized throughout. Tahir Bond complemented him with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, as the Warhawk backcourt continued to show growing chemistry. On the wing, Jeremiah Police delivered a glue-guy performance, stuffing the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and four blocks to anchor the defensive effort.
Head Coach Derrick Powell praised the team's balance and effort. "That was a really well-rounded performance from these guys tonight," Powell said. "Jeremiah continues to impress me with his effort on the defensive end, he's one of the best off-ball defenders I've been able to coach, and he showed that tonight. We've got to keep this backcourt in sync and let the ball flow through Jordan and Tahir like it did tonight."
Calhoun (6-6) will now travel to Knoxville to face Pellissippi State on Tuesday, December 16, with tipoff set for 3 p.m. central.
