Women's Basketball Tops Vol State, 72-54
Decatur, AL — Calhoun women's basketball continued their strong homestand Saturday afternoon, pulling away late to earn a 72–54 win over Volunteer State at Kelley Gymnasium. While the score line reflected an 18-point victory, the contest remained competitive throughout much of the afternoon before the Warhawks created needed separation down the stretch.
The game opened at a quick pace, with both teams exchanging baskets early. Calhoun gradually began to assert control as the first half unfolded, building a modest lead through consistent execution on both ends of the floor. By the closing minutes of the half, the Warhawks were able to extend that edge, heading into the break with momentum firmly in their favor.
The second half followed a similar script. The Pioneers stayed within striking distance, but Calhoun consistently answered each push. The Warhawks' ability to dominate the interior and share the basketball proved to be the difference, as they outworked Volunteer State on the glass and moved the ball with purpose to create quality scoring opportunities.
Calhoun finished the afternoon with a commanding 51–28 rebounding advantage and dished out 17 assists compared to just four for Vol State. The frontcourt once again anchored the Warhawks' success, led by a dominant performance from Jasmine Ervin. Ervin posted 18 points and 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end, while adding three blocks to cap a physical, high-energy outing in the paint.
Off the bench, Gabrielle Stigger neared a triple-double, stuffing the stat sheet with 14 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds. Her steady playmaking and activity on both ends helped Calhoun maintain control during key stretches as the Warhawks slowly widened the gap.
Head Coach Candace Byrd noted the positives while emphasizing areas for continued growth. "I didn't feel like we completely shut the door tonight," Byrd said. "We did a really good job controlling the glass, but I want us to turn that into even more separation down the stretch. Jaz continues to be a force in the paint, we benefit so much from her second-chance efforts around the rim."
The Warhawks (7-5) will now hit the road, traveling to Knoxville to take on Pellissippi State on Tuesday, December 26, with tipoff set for 1 p.m. central.
