Men's Basketball Downs Motlow State 81-61
Decatur, AL — Calhoun men's basketball controlled the night from start to finish on Monday, rolling past Motlow State (TN) 81–61 at Kelley Gymnasium. The Warhawks opened with a steady pace, trading baskets with the Bucks through the early stages before gradually tightening their grip on the game. As Calhoun settled in defensively and found rhythm on the offensive end, the lead stretched to 38–30 by halftime.
The second half was even more decisive. Calhoun dictated the tempo, attacked the paint, and steadily widened the margin, outscoring Motlow by 12 in the final 20 minutes to lock in a convincing 20-point victory. The Warhawks' edge on the boards proved to be the defining difference. Despite Motlow entering the matchup with a clear size advantage, Calhoun won the rebounding battle 44–31, repeatedly closing out defensive possessions and creating second-chance opportunities on the other end.
While the free-throw struggles lingered, Calhoun shot just over 52% at the line, the Warhawks made up for it with efficient work from the field, connecting on nearly 50% of their attempts. The sophomore tandem of Tahir Bond and Jordan Johnson powered the offense, each finishing with 17 points. Bond shot an even 50%, while Johnson hit 54% of his looks in another steady all-around performance.
Head Coach Derrick Powell praised his team's commitment to the physical side of the game: "The guys were terrific on the glass tonight. We knew we had to put bodies on people all night, and they embraced that. We shot the ball well overall, but we've got to start carrying that over to the free-throw line. Still, this was one we needed, a good win to get back in the column and refocus as we get ready for Vol State."
Calhoun (5–6) will now host Volunteer State on Saturday, December 13 at 4 p.m.
