Women's Basketball Falls to Itawamba, Pearl River in Tough Home Stand
Decatur, AL – It was a challenging week at home for Calhoun women's basketball, as the Warhawks dropped back-to-back contests against Itawamba on Tuesday and Pearl River on Thursday.
On Tuesday night, Calhoun fell 64–49 to Itawamba in a game where the Warhawks struggled to find their footing against the Indians' zone pressure. Calhoun played from behind from the opening quarter and never found an offensive rhythm, being outscored in every period except the fourth. The Warhawks did show late fight, winning the final frame 15–12, but the gap was too large to close. Sophomore guards Farrah Bucker and Gabrielle Stigger led the scoring effort, each finishing with 12 points.
Thursday's matchup against Pearl River proved even more difficult, as the Wildcats controlled the game from the opening tip. Calhoun fell 59–32 and was held to only one quarter of double-digit scoring. Off the bench, Jasmine Ervin provided a bright spot with a hard-earned double-double recording 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Warhawks struggled throughout the night to handle Pearl River's full-court pressure.
Head Coach Candace Byrd was direct in her assessment of the week: "This wasn't us this week, this just wasn't Calhoun basketball. We didn't play with any grit to us. We've got to regroup and get back to who we are. We'll work this week to get better."
Calhoun (5–5) will be off for a week before returning to the court to face Northeast Mississippi on Thursday, December 11 at 6 p.m.
