Women's Basketball Opens Season 1-1
Decatur, AL – Calhoun Women's Basketball opened their 2025–26 campaign with a strong showing across two contests, bouncing back from a tough road loss at Coahoma Community College on Saturday to earn an impressive 71–60 home victory over Columbia State on Monday night.
On Saturday in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Calhoun fell 67–59 to Coahoma despite a standout shooting performance from sophomore Victoria Pyles, who poured in 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including six three-pointers. Jasmine Ervin added 10 points, while Jamya Glover contributed six points off the bench as the Warhawks fought to close the gap late but couldn't overcome a slow first half.
The Warhawks responded in a big way on Monday inside Kelley Gymnasium, finding rhythm early and maintaining control throughout in a 71–60 win over Columbia State. Jasmine Ervin led the charge with 16 points and five rebounds, while Victoria Pyles followed with 15 points and four assists. Gabrielle Stigger added another 15 points, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Glover anchored the interior with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Calhoun's ball movement and efficiency were key in the victory, shooting 58% from the floor as a team while dishing out 10 assists and forcing multiple turnovers on the defensive end.
Head Coach Candace Byrd praised her team's response and balance following the split weekend. "I'm proud of the way our group adjusted after Saturday's game," Byrd said. "We showed poise, shared the basketball, and trusted each other. It's great to see our chemistry coming together this early in the season, now it's about building on that momentum."
The Warhawks (1-1) return to action on Thursday, November 6, when they travel to Snead State for their next matchup.
