Men's Basketball Splits Openers at Kick-Off Classic
Decatur, AL – Warhawk men's basketball opened their season with a strong showing at the Calhoun Kick-Off Classic, defeating Bevill State 83–63 on Friday before falling to Reid State 81–77 in overtime Saturday night. The weekend showcased Calhoun's depth, balance, and competitiveness early in the season as the team moves forward with confidence.
In the opener against Bevill State, the Warhawks came out firing and never looked back. Calhoun shot efficiently from the field and dominated the glass, controlling the tempo on both ends of the floor. Masiah Robinson led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down eight of his 13 attempts, including two from beyond the arc. Carson Muse dominated the interior, posting a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Jordan Johnson added 12 points and Johnathan Johnson provided a spark off the bench with another 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Warhawks' offense was balanced throughout, with multiple players contributing to a steady attack that wore down the Bears. Calhoun's defensive pressure also made a difference, forcing turnovers and limiting Bevill's second-chance opportunities.
Saturday's matchup with Reid State proved to be a battle from start to finish, as the Warhawks fell just short in an 81–77 overtime loss. Calhoun held a late lead in regulation before Reid State tied the game in the final seconds and carried that momentum into the extra period. Jordan Johnson led the Warhawks with 15 points, while Masiah Robinson and Carson Muse each finished with 12. Luke Mosley added a spark off the bench, knocking down three three-pointers to score 11 points, and Tahir Bond chipped in 10 while shooting 58% from the field.
Despite the narrow defeat, the Warhawks showed resilience and growth in their second outing of the year. Head Coach Derrick Powell praised his team's early effort and composure. "For the first weekend of the season, I'm proud of how our guys competed," Powell said. "We saw a lot of positives, our energy, our chemistry, and how we handled adversity. There's plenty to build on, and I think we're going to be a tough team once we settle in."
Calhoun (1–1) will return to action on Tuesday, November 4, traveling to Bevill State for a road matchup and a chance to build on the early momentum from their opening tournament.
