Warhawks Dominate at Pensacola State Invitational
Pensacola, FL – Calhoun Volleyball delivered a statement weekend, posting a perfect 4-0 record at the Pensacola State Invitational. The Warhawks defeated Pearl River, Gadsden State, 10th-ranked Pensacola State, and Roane State across back-to-back days of play.
The Warhawks opened Friday with a four-set win over Pearl River Community College (25-12, 21-25, 25-15, 25-23), highlighted by a double-double from Ava Boyll (10 kills, 17 digs). Later that day, the Warhawks earned a sweep of Gadsden State Community College (25-17, 25-20, 25-22).
Saturday brought the weekend's biggest moment as Calhoun upset 10th-ranked Pensacola State College in a five-set thriller. After dropping the first two sets, the Warhawks battled back to claim a 27-25 win in the third before closing out the match with 25-22 and 15-13 victories to complete the reverse sweep. Calhoun then capped the weekend in dominant fashion, sweeping Roane State Community College (25-11, 25-16, 25-12).
Across the four matches, several players made key contributions to the Warhawks' success. Amber Holshouser helped run the offense with 58 assists, while Maddie Schwabe added 71 assists, 25 digs, and 11 aces to keep the team moving and create opportunities. Ava Boyll made an impact both at the net and in the back row, finishing with 37 kills and 38 digs, including a double-double against Pearl River. Laney Kelley provided a consistent scoring threat with 26 kills, and Lucy Menas anchored the defense with 61 digs, helping Calhoun compete in every rally.
"This was a big weekend for our program," said Head Coach Jamiee Freeman. "Beating a nationally ranked opponent and coming away 4-0 shows how hard our team is working and how well we are coming together."
Calhoun (8-1) will return home on Tuesday, September 2, to host Southern Union at 5:30 p.m.
